Thinking Critically About Reentry

Changing Lives One Literature Piece at a Time….

 The Challenge

In the United States, we incarcerate more people than any other country in the world. In 2023, the U.S., with a population of 342 million, had roughly 1.8 million people incarcerated. To put this into perspective, China with a population of 1.43 billion people held an estimated 1.69 million prisoners that same year.

Our Mission

Reading Between the Lines (RBL) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that uses a literature and arts-based approach to provide incarcerated and formerly incarcerated adults with critical thinking skills needed for successful reentry into society. Participants hone these skills through exploring readings from various genres, including poetry, short stories, essays, memoirs, speeches, and historical documents, with authors ranging from the classic to the contemporary.
